MLK Day Committee 20th annual march on main street in downtown Milford on Sunday, January 19

On Sunday, January 19th, the Huron Valley MLK Day Committee hosted the 20th Annual March on Main Street in downtown Milford. Despite the chilly temperatures, approximately 250 participants showed remarkable spirit and enthusiasm, coming together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The March featured the National Anthem performed by members of Lakeland High School’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Nelson.  During the march, participants were able to appreciate the MLK Day word banners on display in the storefront windows at 27 local businesses.

Inside the arts center awaited all of 2025’s submissions to the Art/Writing/Multimedia Contest, information about MLK Day, and displays honoring Dr. King and the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.  New this year were two exhibits from the Smithsonian Travelling Poster display, one called “A Place for All People” and another entitled “Choosing to Participate.”  The exhibits include a variety of images and information regarding the history of African Americans in the US, as well as some highlighting moments from the nation’s past where people have stood up against hatred and prejudice to effect positive change.  Several artists received awards and recognition for their submissions to the contest, and the event concluded with a Community Children’s Choir performance organized by Mandy York from Music Time of Milford, as well as information about upcoming community service efforts.

The following day, in observance of the MLK Day National Day of Service, the committee extended an invitation to all community members to join in assembling soup meals. This initiative not only fostered community connections but also paid tribute to Dr. King's enduring message of service and compassion.

If you were not able to make it downtown for the march, here is a recap of the event.
