4th grade at court

Our fourth-grade students at Spring Mills Elementary recently had an exciting opportunity to step into the shoes of lawyers, witnesses, and jurors during a unique and unforgettable field trip. In collaboration with the Oakland County Bar Association, students traveled to the Oakland County Circuit Court, where they participated in a mock trial based on a familiar and fun character—SpongeBob SquarePants.

Held in an actual courtroom and presided over by a real judge, this hands-on experience allowed students to explore the workings of the legal system in an interactive and age-appropriate way. Each student took on a courtroom role, from prosecuting and defending attorneys to witnesses and members of the jury. With guidance from legal professionals, they presented arguments, examined evidence, and deliberated on the outcome of the case.

This memorable learning experience brought social studies and civics to life, helping students understand concepts like due process, the roles in a courtroom, and the importance of justice and fairness. More than just a fun day out, the mock trial fostered critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills.

We are grateful to the Oakland County Bar Association and the dedicated legal professionals who volunteered their time to make this experience meaningful and authentic for our students.
