Dear Lakewood Families,
Happy First Friday of Fall and Lakeland Homecoming Weekend!
This year all of our K-5 classrooms are launching a social emotional learning curriculum called Suite 360, which is funded through the Michigan Cares Act. This week our lesson provided students with valuable tools for managing uncomfortable or overwhelming feelings and making safe and healthy choices. The SHIELD Strategy, a six-step approach designed to empower your student in practicing self-regulation, is one way to promote independent problem-solving and maintaining self-control. Here are the six steps: S- Stop and Take a Breath, H- Have an open mind, I- Identify the Problem, E- Explore the Possibilities, L- Listen to Others, D- Decide on the Best Choice. Incorporating the SHIELD Strategy into your child’s daily routines can contribute to a more positive and resilient mindset. You can reinforce these steps at home by practicing them in everyday situations.
This week, we had our first fire drill and next week we will have our first shelter in place drill. For fire safety drills, our students are moved out of the building to a pre-designated safe location, which for Lakewood is the basketball courts. Shelter in place drills are used to shelter students and staff inside the building. Students remain in their classrooms and instruction can continue, often used in short-term emergencies and medical situations.
Families, just a reminder that if you are delivering something to your child’s classroom, like a birthday treat, water bottle, supplies, lunch, gifts, etc.; please make sure your delivery goes through the office.
I hope you have a great weekend, and I hope to see you at the homecoming parade later. I will be judging the floats.
Have a great weekend!
